Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the removal or repositioning of skin and fat around the eyelids. It may be considered for functional or clinical reasons, such as when excess upper eyelid skin affects vision, or for other individual concerns identified during consultation.
Changes to the eyelids can occur over time due to factors such as ageing, skin elasticity, and underlying anatomy. A consultation with a qualified medical practitioner is required to determine whether this procedure is appropriate for your circumstances.
Ptosis Surgery
What is Ptosis Surgery? Ptosis surgery, also called blepharoptosis repair, is performed to correct a drooping upper eyelid that may partially or fully cover the pupil, affecting vision and appearance. The procedure is most commonly performed by oculoplastic surgeons or ophthalmologists who specialize in eyelid surgery. Ptosis can occur due to aging, injury, congenital conditions, or muscle weakness, and surgery aims to restore proper eyelid function.
About the procedure
Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation, depending on the procedure and individual circumstances.
For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is usually made along the natural crease of the eyelid. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision may be made just below the eyelashes or on the inside of the eyelid.
During the procedure, excess skin may be removed and fat may be repositioned or reduced, depending on the surgical plan.
The procedure duration can vary, but is commonly completed within one to two hours.
Recovery
Recovery experiences can vary between individuals. Patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activity in the early recovery period and to follow specific post-operative instructions provided by their practitioner.
Temporary swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common following surgery. Patients may also be advised to avoid certain activities, such as wearing eye make-up or sun exposure, during the recovery period.
Outcomes
Outcomes of blepharoplasty vary between individuals and depend on factors such as skin quality, anatomy, and healing response.
In some cases, the effects of surgery may be long-lasting; however, ongoing changes related to ageing and other factors will continue over time.
Costs
Costs for blepharoplasty vary depending on the procedure and individual requirements.
- Upper eyelid blepharoplasty: from $4500
- Lower eyelid blepharoplasty: from $4500
In some cases where vision is affected, a Medicare rebate may be available. Eligibility depends on clinical criteria and requires assessment by your practitioner.
Detailed fee information will be provided during your consultation.
