What is melanoma, and how can I identify it?

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer due to its ability to spread and grow quickly. Fortunately, if found early, it is very treatable.

To identify melanomas, look out for:

  • Any new spots.
  • Spots/moles that have changed in size, colour, or shape.
  • Spots or moles that have an irregular shape
  • The borders are blurred, irregular, or ragged.
  • The colour of the mole/spot is irregular, with different shades of black/brown/tan, or sometimes grey/white/red/pink/blue.
  • Size increases and gets bigger.
  • A new lesion on the skin
  • Spots/moles that itch or have a tendency to bleed.
